I do not understand why Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron believes that the introduction of the alternative vote will "put an end to safe seats for MPs" (Vote yes to AV and build bridges, says Miliband, 30 March). At the 2010 general election, around one-third of MPs elected received more than half of the vote in their constituencies. These MPs therefore, could be said to hold safe seats and under AV would be elected after the count of first preferences, without a single vote being redistributed.

• Is Ed Miliband saying yes to everything at the moment? Yes to AV, then yes to marriage (Report, 31 March). Could this be the time for brother David to ask for a cabinet job?

• How does this (Chinese university plans to 'aid' students identified as having radical thoughts, 29 March) differ from the encouragement of UK academics to identify potential Islamic extremists? I think I can see the difference...

• Jon Henley considers that 600 watts is "about the same power as a car stereo system" (Can you really fight fire with electricity?, G2, 30 March). Is he the one who routinely drives past my window at 2am?

• To settle the matter of whether horses know when it's their birthday (Letters, 30 March), shouldn't we get some research done by Gallup?

• To adapt a quote from Wittgenstein: we say that a dog wags its tail because it wants to go for a walk; we do not say a dog wags its tail because it wants to go for a walk next Thursday. Surely the same applies to horses?
