Spring skiing conditions are widespread in Europe with the best skiing on the upper, north-facing slopes. French and Swiss lower slopes have slush and bare patches. It has been cooler in Italy which currently has the best European skiing. There is fresh snow in Canadian Revelstoke. Mammoth (California, US) justifies its name with 58cm of fresh snow this week and another 100cm forecast.

Continued sunshine has marred skiing in lower Austrian resorts such as St Johann (10-40cm) where only 7/18 lifts are running. Higher up, Obergurgl (45-170cm) and Pitztal (87-281cm) are better.

Swiss Saas Fee (42-279cm) and Verbier (5-145cm) have good skiing on the upper slopes. Val Senales (30-270cm) is the best in Italy, but Sauze D'Oulx (80-160cm) and Champoluc (35-130cm) are not far behind.

It has been sunny in France with lower slope snow becoming heavy in the afternoons. Avoriaz (60-120cm) has the best skiing in the Portes de Soleil while Méribel (Trois Vallées, 30-117cm) and Val d'Isere (59-140cm) are also good.

There will be fresh snow across Europe this weekend, with rain below a freezing level of 2,000m. French and Italian resorts expect 10-25cm, with 32cm in parts of Switzerland. It will remain bright and sunny in Austria with less snowfall, but some glacial resorts could receive 10-20cm of new snow. In the US, Tahoe (California) expects a stunning 180cm of fresh snow while Vail (Colorado) should have a more manageable 20cm snowfall.
