Letters: Majestic whine

With reference to the news that Britain has its first female self-made billionaire, Dame Mary Perkins of Specsavers (Report, 8 May), whatever else she may be, she is not a "self-made" billionaire, any more than any other billionaire can be. All the people who work, or have worked for her in the past, either directly or indirectly, have helped her accrue this wealth. Are their rewards anything like as spectacular as those enjoyed by Dame Perkins and her family?

• If protecting children is such an important issue (Report, 10 May), and it must be, given the vilification of social workers and their managers when things go wrong for children as seen in a long line of cases, then why is it acceptable for the children's minister, Tim Loughton, to delay consideration of this important issue "until later in the year". It is hardly appropriate role-modelling.

• The meanness of Buck House is the stuff of legends (G2, 10 May). My grandfather Tom Clarkson came from Lincolnshire to work in the royal mews around 1900. He was paid well below the skilled farrier rate and had to supply his own work aprons. He left and worked for the Southern Railway at Bricklayers Arms Depot, where they were union organised.

• The sexiest dance instructions (Letters, 10 May), Lena Horne's New-fangled Tango: "And there's nuthin' to it / You just sorta stand there / And just sorta do it," followed by "It's just like romancin' while dancin' / Who's dancin'?".

• "Standing still" or "Dancing on the ceiling"? Perhaps the advice from Frank Sinatra is safest: "I won't dance, don't ask me."

• "A sudden ignition of cowslips … Swashbuckling clouds and a rain of mad birds…" (Country diary, 11 May). It must be Paul Evans. Could we have an In praise of... Paul Evans?
