While the Middletons arrived in classy limousines, the likes of Princess Michael of Kent had to make do with coaches
A troop of lesser royals, blue of blood and heavy of pocket, arrived at Westminster Abbey not in a motorcade of sleek Rolls-Royces but in what can only be described as a convoy of lowly minibuses.
"Must be the Middletons," sniped cruel commentators when the vans were first spotted, but while the commoners arrived in classy limousines, Princess Michael of Kent struggled to fit her hat into one of the practical hire vehicles, and other royals such as Zara Phillips, her fiance Mike Tindall and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester jostled for space.
It was a moment of classic British awkwardness. The BBC's Huw Edwards desperately tried to avoid the vulgar term: "Here are other royals arriving in mini … coaches," he tried, with little conviction.
It was Not A Big Deal, insisted Clarence House.
"It is usual on these occasion to hire vehicles of this kind," soothed a spokesman.
"This is not the first time they have been used, they have been used many time before," he said, while somehow avoiding using the word: minibus.
