Showing everyone in the abbey how it's done: Victoria Beckham in a dress from her own collection, David sporting Ralph Lauren
As the guests arrived at Westminster Abbey it fell to showbiz royalty to provide a certain kind of glamour amid the sea of chatting invitees. At approximately 9.15am the Beckhams slowly made their way into the abbey, aware that millions of pairs of eyes were eagerly awaiting the pair's big wardrobe reveal. He wore Ralph Lauren, she wore Victoria Beckham. It was a squeal-inducing sight.
A heavily pregnant Victoria chose to wear a midnight blue tunic dress from her own collection – no bump flashing for Mrs Beckham, who prefers the play-it-down approach to pregnancy. Artfully, she let fly with the accessories. A Philip Treacy hat resembled a blue Werther's Original toffee scored through with a fancy twig. It worked.
Its placement front and centre of her forehead was an early indication of a new hat trend – as it turned out all the most accomplished hat wearers (including Princess Beatrice and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson) chose to style their headgear in this way. This she played off against a simple swishing ponytail. Scarily high shoes and a sleek clutch bag from her own collection completed the look.
But it was David Beckham who really stole the style spotlight in the congregation. He utterly outplayed David Cameron and the like in his Ralph Lauren tails – demonstrating that you don't need Eton practice to master the art of posh suiting. On the right breast of his morning suit he had pinned the OBE he received in 2003, revealing that for men, medals are the new brooches. He too had a Philip Treacy hat, but wisely opted to carry it rather than ruin his rakishly slicked-down and parted hair. It was a welcome camera-hogging masterstroke.
It wasn't all good-taste-above-celebrity-status. The winged cross tattoo on the back of his neck fought desperately for attention with his classic winged tipped shirt. In the end the tattoo won the battle for attention, proving that even at a royal wedding the common touch trumps the traditional. As ever: heartfelt thanks to the Beckhams for skilfully raising the style bar, no matter how huge the occasion.
