Rising 90 years, and having received state retirement and teachers' pensions for nigh on 30 years, it appears that I owe society an apology (Pensions report, 11 March). While trying, with some puzzlement, to summon up a modicum of penitence, I am happily arranging for my 90th birthday party. Sorry!

• A Labour peer acts as a patsy for a rightwing Tory-led government and attacks the pension rights of millions of public-sector workers. Where are Ed Miliband and other senior figures, we might ask? Totally absent from the TV and radio and saying nothing. Many of us thought the Labour party was supposed to be there to defend workers. These days it seems carrying a party card does not disqualify you from being an outrider for a Tory government.

• So there could be a million-strong strike by people who are concerned to protect their gold-plated pensions. Is there any organisation for those (the vast majority) who do not and will not have this luxury, whether final salary or average salary?

• Tripoli, Benghazi, Derna, Tobruk are in the news (Libya, 11 March). Ciggies going under the counter (Editorial, 10 March). I never realised my second-childhood would be so comprehensive. Give us a song, Dame Vera.

• So the government is considering the introduction of plain, unbranded fag packets. Is this to make more room on the back of them for planning government policy?

• It is a marvellous idea to honour Mary Wollstonecraft (Letters, 8 March). She also wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Men (a year before Tom Paine wrote Rights of Man), denouncing Edmund Burke for condoning slavery and hereditary privilege. All the statues of kings and queens and nothing for Mary? It shames us all.
