Victim named locally as Harry 'Harmless' Stockman, and a man in his 30s is being questioned by detectives

A senior member of the loyalist terrorist group the Ulster Volunteer Force has been stabbed and seriously injured in Belfast.

He was attacked by a lone assailant outside Tesco on the Ballygomartin Road on Wednesday afternoon in front of terrified shoppers.

He was named locally as Harry "Harmless" Stockman, from the loyalist Greater Shankill area, who announced in June 2009 that the UVF was disarming. It is understood he was stabbed eight times. Sources on the Shankhill roadtold the Guardian the senior loyalist has since died.

Local residents were linking the stabbing to the UVF murder last year of Bobby Moffett, shot dead on the Shankill Road in broad daylight as part of a feud

A man in his 30s from the area has been arrested and is being questioned by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
