Man entered building and killed at least one person, according to varied reports

A man wearing Afghan army uniform has killed at least one person at the Afghan defence ministry, a government spokesman has said.

The man began shooting at defence staff inside the ministry on Monday morning and was believed to have been killed during the incident, said General Mohammad Zahir Azimi.

But reports are sketchy and it is unclear whether he used a suicide bomb or a gun. Tolo television said the attacker got into the building wearing an army uniform and with a defence ministry pass.

The injured included an assistant to the defence minister and secretary of the army chief of staff, the report said, quoting unidentified defence ministry sources.

The attack comes within month of foreign forces starting to transfer security responsibilities to Afghan troops. Nato-led troops have been claiming solid progress in efforts to bolster the numbers and quality of the Afghan police and army.

On Saturday a suicide bomber in an Afghan army uniform entered a desert base in the east of the country and killed five foreign and four Afghan soldiers – the highest toll of Nato-led troops in a single attack for several months.

On Friday a suicide bomber in police uniform evaded tight security at the police headquarters in Kandahar city and killed Khan Mohammad Mujahid, the provincial police chief.
