Jon Cruddas and Maurice Glasman (Theft in a City state, 6 April) fail to understand the sound business reasons for our plans to revoke outdated bylaws governing Billingsgate market. Throughout the lengthy consultation process, we have been open and evenhanded in our dealings with the Unite union and we have listened to the fish porters who believe that the market's future is under threat. We have also taken on board concerns from the fish merchants and the London Fish Merchants' Association, who have told us that their businesses are being adversely affected by the portering arrangements. Billingsgate market does not need saving, and the City of London is not trying to undermine its unique character or future. When my colleagues voted to press ahead with the revocation of the bylaws, they did so because they want Billingsgate to flourish, not fail.
